Why I play this game

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Some days you play wow you feel surrounded by idiots in every PuG you go to and you ask yourself, why am I bothering? Or you’ve had a crap day and wonder if it’s even worth logging on. If you only get annoyed, end up not enjoying it when playing, what is it that keeps you coming back? It could be addiction, a lot of people suffer from it, unfortunately. It could be the lack of something else to do and the will to do something about it or it could be that you enjoy seeing yourself as better than others and need the confidence boost it might give you. There are plenty of reasons.

I personally play this game for a different reason: the people I play with who makes the experience so much better. I’ve gotten some good friends in the game, some of them I knew before I ventured into the world that is computer games and some of them I’ve gotten to know via the game. I think what happened this week proves as a good example why it’s the people that make it worth while.

The long road to a hundred mounts

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Upon request I’ve compiled a list of the mounts that in the end awarded the Mountain o’ Mounts achievement. There are several mounts available that I have yet to collect so this is mostly to show which specific mounts I personally got for the achievement. I have done my best to include what is needed to obtain the various mounts and grouped the various mounts by how to get them: reputation requirements to buy or get given the mount, purchasable mounts that are not reputation dependent, instance drops, achievement rewards and other mounts. At the bottom of the page I will include a short list of mounts that were options I was considering had I not been lucky with a few rare drops. There are full lists of obtainable mounts on various sites, for example WoW Vault has a very comprehensive list.

Before you start collecting these mounts you should know that it will take a lot of time grinding for reputation, tokens for purchasing mounts and gold in order to get all these mounts.

Less-rabi – the slow way

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

It is quite well known that the faster Moorabi (Gundrak) dies the less interrupts are necessary to prevent him for transforming and therefore makes it easier get the achievement. I remember trying this achievement back at the start of the Ulduar days, but it was terribly hard even with trying to coordinate interrupts and using heroism etc. These days it seems a popular belief that the way to go is having a shaman and four or five dps specced characters in the group in order to get the achievement, or have a so and so gear score (don’t get me started on that) or similar.  This is not the case.

Moorabi is already crying, maybe he knows how this story ends...

New toys? For me?

I have never had much luck in wow. (That is a statement no one will no longer believe after reading this post.) Normally it takes tries upon tries to finally get what I am after, regarding both drops and rolls. It almost seems like it has all been stored up until this week and I’ve been unbelievably lucky.

The Zulian Tiger

I have lost count how many times I have been to Zul’Gurub poking the two bosses that can possibly drop mounts. I got exalted a while ago and since then my other half has nearly gained exalted as well from mostly just handing in the rep items dropped off some of the trash next to the two bosses. Zul’Gurub has nearly become Rebella’s second home. The bow drop off the raptor boss has on far too many occasions fooled me into thinking the mount has dropped and that’s as close as I’ve been. However, at the end of last week, the lovely Priestess Thekal finally gave up her mount!

White Hawkstrider

After a very hectic day yesterday we decided to just relax with a couple of instances that could yield a mount. I figured that my luck was long gone and I might get another after 6 months or so. Little did I know how wrong the assumption would be. Magister’s Terrace has always been a favourite of mine, even back in the TBC days of crowdcontrolling nightmares. (It is here the name Monstarkin was first used, but that warrants a post of its own.) The pet has dropped a fair few times, the orb only a couple of times and the mount had yet to be seen – until yesterday! I don’t know how long I was sat staring at the screen for, I just could not believe it. Only four days after I had gotten the Zulian tiger. Unbelievable! I was for a moment worried that we would not go back until the Bear said he quite liked this mount, so we will try to get it to drop again! I love Magister’s Terrace, and I love this mount!

The Bear

The Bear is not a mount, but still needs mentioning. I could not write this post and I very much doubt I would have stuck to trying for the mounts for so long if it wasn’t for him, so thank you!

Sea Turtle

Sea Turtle

Ever since I wandered into Northrend I was fascinated by the Kalu’ak and their awesome mounts and wondered how I could get one of them myself. I was quite gutted when I found out it wasn’t possible, and then I got equally happy when it was added with a patch as a drop from the fishing pools in Northrend. I thought if I kept fishing I would soon get it. It turned out to be a much longer quest than I had planned.

The first week I saw a few people getting the mount, of which a fair few were bragging that they got it in the first fishing pool they were at and that they hadn’t even planned on trying to get the mount. I thought great, this will be easy! Round and round Northrend I flew to fight for fishing pools and the mount started to seem more elusive than ever, even though I kept seeing more people with it. After I had enough fish to make about 100 feasts I slowly decided that once again the random number generator had forgotten about me and I went back to my normal amounts of fishing.

Then one day, a couple of months later at least, when I nothing better to do, I went to gather more fish to restock my fish feasts stacks. In River’s Heart in Sholazar Basin I suddenly had this odd look icon in my loot window, an achievement popped up and plenty of ‘Congratulations’ in guild chat appeared before I slowly realised what had dropped! MY PRECIOUS SEA TURTLE! All I can say is: it was well worth the wait – it is awesome!

Raiding Achievements

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

The achievements were new with the Wrath of the Lich King and there are plenty to try to get. (Good luck getting all of them!) There are achievements for pretty much everything and you can for example obtain cute pets or awesome mounts for completing some of them. I won’t get into those here, but stick with raid type achievements, two in particular – epic and general dungeon achievements. An increasingly growing trend is having to link various of your achievements to get into groups for dungeons, regardless of the difficultly of the particular dungeon. Aside from creating fake achievements, the most popular achievements are easy to get without having to put a lot of effort into it.

The Epic Achievement

The Epic achievement progress

What I find funny about this achievement is that when you link it people seem to think this means you have good gear. Scarily some people rely so much on achievements for accepting people into a group that they forget how easily they can give the wrong impression without having to use addons to create fake achievements. I will use my druid as an example:
