Healing in a raid

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Most classes find themselves healing differently if they are assigned to tank healing than if they were put on raid healing duty. There are several reasons for this, one is obviously mana management while another is healing output and efficiency. Once again this post will focus mostly on a 10 man scenario where it’s beneficial to know how to heal both the tanks and the raid, however, each section will touch upon the healing rotations you might favour in 25 man where the healing assignments are stricter.

This is meant to help understand how your co-healer works, as well as help those new to healing to get a basic understanding how their class works in regards to tank and raid healing. The abilities most commonly used by each classes have been explained in the introduction to each class, so you can use those as a reference point should you need it: discipline priest, holy priest, restoration druid, restoration shaman and holy paladin.

Stereotypical pug members

Friday, January 29th, 2010

After being in pugs several times, there are always certain types of people you will end up going with. I have tried to make a list of the common types of people I have encountered. Generally you will have around 10 people you would recognise from the list below in a 25man and the remaining 10-15 are people you would deem normal who don’t make much of themselves, but perform perfectly well. Of course the more friends and people you know are in your pug, the number of the stereotypes should decrease.

Healing ICC10 – The Lower Spire

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

This post could have been posted a month ago, but I wanted to make sure I’d healed the first four bosses as multiple classes before writing it. So far my restoration druid, holy paladin and discipline priest have healed the majority of the bosses in this wing. (My shaman is currently elemental and enhancement dual spec, so she has yet to go here as a healer.) As I have not been very eager to pug ICC25 yet, this post will focus on the 10man encounters. I will not go into general tactics and assume you have already read these elsewhere and are familiar with the various abilities in the different encounters. If you are not yet familiar with this, please have a look at Tankspot (they have some great videos), Wow Wiki or other sites with proper tactics. The post is mostly aiming at new or less experienced healers as hard core raiders are already far past this wing of ICC.

Research gear upgrades

Friday, January 8th, 2010

As always with new dungeons and raids, like new Icecrown Citadel wing this week, there are plenty of new bits of shiny loot people are dying to get their hands on, especially in pugs.  Sometimes it is not easy to see what is an upgrade and how much of an upgrade said item would be especially now in WotLK where there are so many stats to consider.

Organised lists and how to find upgrades

Hmm.. What will Loken drop today?Although organised list are far from necessary, they may help you keep track of what items you are after, how big an upgrade they are and most importantly: where they drop! There are many ways of making lists and one would be to index it in item slots and list upgrades per slot together. A different approach would be to write it up as items per boss or dungeon. One of the first things to do is find out what items different bosses drop. Wowhead is a great resource where you can find practically all the information you need. Once you’ve found out what loot drops you should compare it to your current gear. With all the different stats available it can often be difficult to decide on what stat to prioritise.

Raiding Achievements

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

The achievements were new with the Wrath of the Lich King and there are plenty to try to get. (Good luck getting all of them!) There are achievements for pretty much everything and you can for example obtain cute pets or awesome mounts for completing some of them. I won’t get into those here, but stick with raid type achievements, two in particular – epic and general dungeon achievements. An increasingly growing trend is having to link various of your achievements to get into groups for dungeons, regardless of the difficultly of the particular dungeon. Aside from creating fake achievements, the most popular achievements are easy to get without having to put a lot of effort into it.

The Epic Achievement

The Epic achievement progress

What I find funny about this achievement is that when you link it people seem to think this means you have good gear. Scarily some people rely so much on achievements for accepting people into a group that they forget how easily they can give the wrong impression without having to use addons to create fake achievements. I will use my druid as an example:

Finding a Good PuG

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

PuGs or Pick-Up Groups can consist of a mix of friends and random people, or just random people. Any person in your group who are not already on your friends list, in your guild, on your friend’s friends list or in your friend’s guild are generally considered a PuG person. A PuG person is a person you have little experience playing with and have little knowledge of. A group with several random people like this can go very well, but it can also go very badly. My personal experience is that PuGs aren’t all bad, but there are a few precautions I take before joining a random group, especially for a raid. I will try to explain what I look for before I join a group to hopefully help others find more good groups than bad ones. The following comments are mostly related to raids, rather than heroics, but can work for both. As gearing up as become easy, getting good groups for heroics isn’t anywhere near as difficult as it was in TBC.

Be Prepared

It is important that you make a good impression as it could make it easier for you to get into a group in the future. Not bring your own buff food, elixirs, pots etc for a raid you’re not quite over geared for generally doesn’t go down very well and you get labeled lazy or a slacker. Supplying the odd fish feast yourself if you have the skill and not relying on others to put down one each time also doesn’t hurt.
